Our January-March cohort has become a surprise favourite amongst our families. Whilst this time of year in Italy might not have wall-to-wall sunshine, it does have its unique appeal. Find out why winter is a winning time to experience the Boundless Life in Tuscany!
Sample skiing without the ski holiday ⛷️
Ever wanted to take the kids skiing for the first time but were worried about committing to a full ski holiday? Boundless Tuscany may have the solution. Our home base in Pistoia is perfectly located to explore many other enigmatic Tuscan locations - including the mountainous Appenine region with Abetone as the jewel in its crown.
Families can hire a car (with help from our team) to take the scenic trip up. Alternatively, a bus runs all the way from Pistoia to Abetone.
Family-Friendly Skiing in Tuscany 🎿
Family-friendly facilities: Abetone offers a range of facilities and amenities suitable for families. It has ski schools with specialised instructors who are experienced in teaching children and beginners. They provide a safe and supportive environment for learning to ski or improving skiing skills.
Abetone has a diverse selection of ski slopes catering to different skill levels, including gentle slopes for beginners and more challenging runs for advanced skiers. This variety ensures that each family member, regardless of their skiing ability, can find slopes suitable for their level of experience.
Scenic beauty: Abetone is situated in the beautiful Apennine Mountains, offering breathtaking natural landscapes. The picturesque surroundings add to the overall experience, providing an opportunity for families to enjoy the beauty of nature while skiing.
Apres ski: With a charming village atmosphere and several restaurants, cafes, and shops, Abetone offers plenty of opportunities to relax after a day on the slopes.
More than just skiing: Families can engage in various off-slope activities such as hiking, snowshoeing, snowboarding, and tobogganing.
We cannot overstate how INCREDIBLE the spectacle of the Viareggio Carnival is. All of the families who visited in 2023 were blown away by the sheer scale of the floats - renowned to be the biggest in the world - and the wonderful family-friendly party atmosphere.
Across 6 dates in February 2024, the ‘passeggiata’ (the seaside promenade) will once again be taken over by gigantic feats of engineering and human creativity.
The carnival has now been an annual event for over 150 years and is deeply embedded in the culture of this Tuscan seaside town.
Boundless Life families can easily reach the carnival via a direct train from Pistoia which takes approximately 40 minutes. The promenade is then an easy 10-15 walk from Viareggio station.
This is an event not to be missed!
Truly Authentic Tuscany 🍋
One of the reasons why our January families enjoy this cohort so much is the opportunity to experience our locations in a very unhurried and authentic way. Tourist numbers at this time of year are much lower so families have a unique opportunity to be truly immersed in the local culture and people of Tuscany. The pace is more relaxed and the famous sights - such as the museums and galleries of Florence - are a lot less busy relative to the summer months.
Many of our families have taken the opportunity to have a night or two away to explore other Italian gems such as Cinque Terre and Venice. Being “off-season” the accommodation rates for such stays are also a lot lower.
Winter Weather in Tuscany ❄️
Don’t despair, sun-worshippers! Our January cohort families enjoyed PLENTY of sun during their stay - especially in February and March. There were alfresco lunches and even some beach days.
If you are ready to start 2024 with some dolce vita hop on a call with us. We’d love to say ciao!
