Long-term travel with teens can be an incredible experience, fostering independence, cultural awareness, and family bonding. However, it also presents unique socio-emotional challenges that both teens and parents will need to navigate. Learn how, together, you can clear a path through this phase, and how our Trailblazers Programme has been designed with the challenges of travelling with teenagers in mind.
“I’m worried my children won’t want to travel with us once they become teenagers.”
“My teenager is lonely and craving the company of other teenagers.”
There is a common area of concern amongst slow-travelling and Digital Nomad Families with teens or soon-to-be teens. A world of change is coming as they transition into adults - and all this is happening against the backdrop of often constant change. New locations. New languages. New friends. New goodbyes. This is especially challenging for tweens and teens who began travelling at this age and have left established peer groups behind.
It is tempting for parents and teens alike to seek out a degree of stability as a result. This sometimes even marks the end of their travels together. BUT it doesn't have to. Many families have navigated this phase of personal development and found ways to continue their journey together - without compromising on the needs of their teens.
The challenges of travelling with teens
Here are some key hurdles to overcome:
Identity and belonging Teens are at a crucial stage of development where they're solidifying their sense of self and belonging. Being constantly on the move can disrupt their usual social circles and routines, making it difficult to feel grounded and connected to peers.
Loss of autonomy: While travel offers opportunities for independence, teens may also feel a loss of control over their environment and daily lives. Parents constantly making decisions about destinations, schedules, and activities can lead to frustration and resentment.
Homesickness and culture shock: Leaving behind familiar surroundings and loved ones can trigger feelings of homesickness, especially during initial adjustments to new cultures and environments. This is true for all, of course, but particularly common in teens.
Academic disruption: Maintaining academic continuity and consistency during travel can be tricky, especially if adhering to a traditional school schedule is impractical. Teens may struggle with staying motivated and engaged in their studies.
Interpersonal relationships: Building and maintaining meaningful relationships can be difficult while constantly moving. Teens may miss their usual friends and struggle to connect with new people in temporary settings.
How can parents - and the Trailblazers Programme - help?
We have collated some practical tips to help parents successfully navigate this sometimes tricky period of socio-emotional development.
In addition, you can learn more about how our teen Trailblazers Programme has been carefully curated to specifically acknowledge and address the challenges described above.
⚖️ Balancing structure and flexibility: Finding the right balance between providing structure and allowing for flexibility can be challenging. Teens need some level of routine and predictability, but also opportunities for exploration and independence.
Boundless Life’s NEW Trailblazers Programme for 13-14 year-olds will span 9 months and 3 diverse locations: Bali, Greece and Montenegro.
With 3 months in each place and a structured approach to academics, teens will have both the established routine they need AND plenty of opportunities to explore with their fellow Trailblazers.
🔌 Connect with other travelling families: Joining online communities or finding other families travelling with teens can provide support and a sense of shared experience.
The Trailblazers Programme requires families to commit for the full 9-month duration (1 academic year) for good reason: This allows for the consistency that our teens crave. Imagine being able to take your friends with you on a 9-month journey of discovery and collaborative learning!
🫂 Communication and conflict resolution: Open and honest communication is crucial, especially during disagreements or challenging situations. Parents should create a safe space for teens to voice their concerns and feelings, and be willing to listen and adapt their approach when necessary.
Boundless Care is a crucial element of our education programme across all age groups. It is dedicated to the socio-emotional well-being of our Explorers (students) - including healthy conflict resolution.
Our Trailblazers will be spending a lot of time together and will be helping each other overcome different academic and personal challenges. This requires empathy, enhanced communication skills, and the ability to resolve conflicts positively and constructively. Boundless Care will help our teen Explorers further develop these crucial life skills.
🔗 Maintaining family bonds: While travel can strengthen family bonds, it can also strain them if not managed effectively. Prioritising quality time together, engaging in shared activities, and respecting individual needs are key to maintaining a positive family dynamic.
One of the great things about the Trailblazers Programme is that it provides this crucial balance. Teens will love the opportunity to bond with their peers and continue on their path of self-discovery. Outside of the programme, the whole family can reconnect, grow and bond through the multitude of shared experiences offered by all Boundless Life stays.
🎒 Academic consistency: Establishing a structured approach to education with your teen is important. Remember, that they are craving routine but also freedom. Involve them in decisions regarding educational approaches and goals. Try to find a method or platform that not only works for them but motivates and excites them and ignites their passions and interests.
