Taking a Deep Dive Into Bali: 3 months of cultural immersion connection for your family

June 20, 2023

Bali is so much more than picture-perfect beaches and Instagrammable moments. Those holidaying here may only have time to scratch the surface of what Bali has to offer culturally, historically, spiritually, gastronomically and visually.

Dive into what our immersive 3-month Boundless Life Experience in Bali could allow you and your family to discover this September!

What will the kids be doing at the Education Centre?

Happy kids = happy parents. As such, our first stop on this voyage of discovery is the Education Centre.

As always, the curriculum will be underpinned by a Quest which, in turn, is based on one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. This September, the Quest across all Boundless locations will be ‘The Water of Life’ linked to ‘SDG 6 - Clean Water and Sanitation.’

The Quest will focus on access to safe water sources and sanitation for all. Children will explore key areas such as safe water, affordable water, public sanitation projects, reducing water pollution, water-use efficiency, and water-related ecosystems.

The overarching goal of this Quest is to increase children's awareness of the issue of biodiversity and how it is important to take care of our planet and all its living things. Science and Ethics are the key areas of focus for this Quest.

Bringing the Quest to Life

Bali is the perfect setting for our Quest. The Education Centre in Sanur is located just minutes from the sea so there are ample opportunities to be immersed in nature whilst learning and turning real-world issues into actions. For example, supporting the local community with their endeavours to keep the coastline clean. Or visiting the local Turtle Conservation Centre to see in action the important work that they undertake.

Are there activities for the kids after school hours?

Absolutely! In common with all our other Boundless Life destinations, Extracurricular Activities (ECAs) of Spanish, Guitar and Martial Arts will be offered. In addition, a range of Bali-specific activities will be available that make the most of everything Sanur has to offer. This will include Surfing!

Sanur is a great place for kids (and adults!) to learn to surf for several reasons:

🏄🏽‍♀️ Gentle waves: The waves in Sanur are usually small and gentle, making it a perfect place for kids to learn to surf without feeling intimidated or overwhelmed by big waves.

🏄🏽‍♀️ Shallow water: The water in Sanur is quite shallow, which means that kids can stand up and touch the bottom while they're learning to surf. This provides a greater sense of security and makes it easier for them to learn the proper techniques of surfing.

🏄🏽‍♀️ Experienced instructors: Boundless Life is partnering with experienced surf instructors who are skilled at working with children. They are patient, and knowledgeable, and can teach kids the basics of surfing in a fun and safe environment.

🏄🏽‍♀️ Clean and family-friendly: The beach is clean and safe, and there are plenty of restaurants and cafes nearby where families can relax and enjoy watching their children learn.

Three months is a great amount of time to not only get an introduction to surfing but really start to improve your skills and gain confidence!

Kids are happy! What about the parents?

There are endless possibilities for exploration - both for the grown-ups (if you decide to take a break from working at the beautiful coworking Hub) and for families. Our monthly community programming will let you pick and mix activities and experiences to create the ultimate Bali itinerary to suit your tastes.  Weekly, complimentary yoga and meditation sessions will provide a regular grounding moment and time to reflect.

If you want to venture beyond Sanur…

Continuing the theme of the Quest, here are some water-based experiences that are slightly further afield but well worth a visit.

Nusa Penida for families

Nusa Penida is a popular destination for families due to its stunning natural beauty, tranquil atmosphere, and variety of family-friendly activities. The island boasts beautiful beaches, crystal-clear waters, and exotic wildlife, making it a perfect place for families who love nature and adventure. Families can also enjoy activities such as snorkelling, diving, hiking, and exploring the island's many temples and cultural sites.

Nusa Penida is home to a diverse range of aquatic life due to its location in the Coral Triangle, which is known for its high marine biodiversity which includes majestic Manta Ray.

Getting from Sanur to Nusa Penida

To get to Nusa Penida from Sanur, families can take a 45-minute boat ride from Sanur Beach to the island. Our Crew can help families make the necessary arrangements.

DO go chasing waterfalls!

Who doesn’t love a waterfall? Bali has a few to choose from that you can visit as part of an excursion or day trip.

💧 Tegenungan Waterfall: Located about 30 minutes from Sanur, Tegenungan Waterfall is a popular spot for travellers and locals alike. It features a powerful cascade of water that drops over 20 meters into a pool below, surrounded by lush greenery. Families can swim in the pool and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

💧 Tibumana Waterfall: About an hour's drive from Sanur, Tibumana is a stunning waterfall that is still relatively unknown to many tourists. It features a gentle cascade of water that drops into a clear pool below, surrounded by jungle and rice paddies. Families have the chance to discover this hidden gem!

💧 Kanto Lampo Waterfall: Located about an hour's drive from Sanur, Kanto is a smaller waterfall with a unique shape and beautiful natural surroundings. The waterfall drops into a shallow pool, and families can swim and relax in the refreshing water.

💧 Gitgit Waterfall: A bit further away from Sanur, Gitgit Waterfall is located in the northern part of Bali. The waterfall is around 70 metres high and is surrounded by lush jungle and rice paddies. Maybe combine this with a visit to the Lovina Festival which is also in the north of the island?

Beach Day!

A day on the beach is splendidly easy in Sanur! The beach here is very family friendly with shallow waters that are protected by the reef and more gentle waves. Why not enjoy a picnic with the other Boundless families? Don’t want to risk sand in your sandwiches? No problem! The pedestrian-friendly promenade that runs the length of Sanur’s coastline offers a multitude of shady, family-friendly culinary opportunities from quick snacks right up to gourmet dining.

Why is the September-November cohort a great time to enjoy Bali with Boundless Life?

Sanur, Bali is a popular destination year-round, but there are a few reasons why visiting in autumn (September to November) can be particularly appealing:

🌞 Weather: Autumn is considered the shoulder season in Bali, meaning it falls between the tourist peak season and the low season. The weather is typically warm and sunny, with lower humidity and fewer crowds than in the summer months. This makes it an ideal time to enjoy outdoor activities, such as snorkelling, surfing, and hiking.

📅 Festivals and events: Bali is known for its vibrant culture, and autumn is no exception. Visitors can witness traditional ceremonies and decorations, sample local cuisine, and experience the unique atmosphere of the island. Events include:

  • Lovina Festival in North Bali includes highlights like handicraft exhibitions and an afternoon opening ceremony that features a traditional Balinese marching band called baleganjur and a towering fruit and flower offering or gebogan parade. Maybe combine this with a trip to Gigit Waterfall mentioned above?
  • The Bali International Film Festival.
  • Nusa Dua Fiesta is an annual festival that presents a week-long agenda filled with arts, culture, sports, music and exhibitions. This normally takes place in October.
  • Bali International Triathlon - for those superhumans amongst you!

🎏 Cultural experiences: Sanur is home to many cultural attractions, such as the Le Mayeur Museum and the Blanjong Pillar, which are dedicated to preserving the island's rich history and traditions. In autumn, visitors can explore these sites and learn more about Balinese culture without having to navigate the crowds that can be present during peak season.
