Family Fun Blooms in Tuscany: Why Pistoia is the Perfect Spring Playground for Families

Forget the regular tourist traps and overpriced gelato – the heart of Tuscany beckons with a hidden gem: Pistoia. This charming medieval town, nestled between rolling hills and olive groves, comes alive in spring, offering a magical escape for families seeking adventure, cultural immersion, and delicious delights.

🌷 Spring's Blossoming Beauty

Pistoia is painted in a vibrant palette of green as the sun awakens the Tuscan countryside. Pack a picnic basket and find a sunny spot amidst the ancient trees, by the riverside, or venture slightly further afield to the beautiful ‘Circolo ARCI Prato al Lago’ park and gardens.

🏰 Medieval Masterpieces

Step back in time at the Piazza del Duomo, a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture. Marvel at the Leaning Tower, a smaller but equally fascinating cousin of Pisa's famous tower, and take in the intricate details of the Baptistery of San Giovanni Battista. Don't forget to pose for a family photo under the majestic bronze statue of Grifone, Pistoia's mythical protector.

🎉 Family-friendly Festivities

  • Easter is a wonderful time to be in Italy! Expect colourful events with something for all ages.
  • MIDA – the 88th International Crafts Fair, is set to take place at the Fortezza da Basso, in Florence from 25th April to 1st May 2024. You can discover wonderful handicraft products from Italy and beyond in the beautiful setting of Renaissance Florence.
  • On June 16th, the Luminara of San Ranieri Pisa 2024 is due to take place and it’s one of the most beautiful nights of the year in this ancient city. Expect to see over 70,000 candle lanterns called "lumini" which are placed all over the city and also float down the river Arno. The Leaning Tower and other historical buildings look amazing in the gentle light. The city truly glows!

🗺️ Beyond the Town Walls

Adventure awaits beyond Pistoia's walls! Rent bikes and explore the scenic Ciclovia dell'Olio, a cycling path winding through olive groves and vineyards. For a taste of adrenaline, head to the Monteferrato Nature Reserve for hiking trails and breathtaking views. On hot days, cool off with a refreshing dip in the hidden waterfalls of the Grotta Giusti thermal baths.

😋 Culinary Delights for Every Palate

No Italian adventure is complete without indulging in the local cuisine. Pistoia's restaurants offer authentic Tuscan fare, from creamy pasta dishes and wood-fired pizzas to fresh salads and grilled meats. Don't miss the chance to try local delicacies like biroldo, a sweet bread with almonds and raisins, and tortello verde di patate, potato ravioli served with a sage butter sauce. For a sweet treat, grab a scoop of gelato from a traditional gelateria – it's the perfect way to end a perfect day.

📆 All this, without the summertime crowds

You and your family can experience all that beautiful Tuscany has to offer with typically warm and sunny weather (perhaps the odd shower thrown in here and there) but without the peak summertime crowds.

Springtime in Pistoia with your family promises an unforgettable experience. From historical treasures to outdoor adventures and mouthwatering cuisine, this charming Tuscan town holds something for everyone. So pack your bags, lace up your walking shoes, and get ready to create memories that will last a lifetime.

💬 A final thought from our General Manager in Tuscany

“In fact, some have noticed that the Tuscans' one true passion is food. Quite an unfair observation, given that we also developed a deep interest in winemaking and keeping memories of the past alive!

But where our heart truly beats is the peaceful, quiet, well-cultivated land - because all Tuscans have a love for things that grow slowly. Ah, yes, no doubt our ways appear quaint to others…But today more than ever I am adamant that it is not a bad thing to celebrate a peaceful and simple life.”

Francesco Bizzozero (with a little inspiration from Tolkein 😉).
