Earth Day is a big deal in our Boundless Education calendar as it is an opportunity to consolidate so many of our efforts and learnings throughout the year into a range of activities that bring the day’s significance and meaning to life for our Explorers. However, working to protect our planet and bring about positive change isn’t a token gesture for Boundless; it’s at the heart of our mission to transform learners into global changemakers.
Quests with purpose
Our project-based ‘Quests’ provide our students (Explorers) with a framework for their learning throughout both our full 3-month cohorts and Summer Getaways. Each new Quest is based on one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
What are UN Sustainable Development Goals?
The United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a comprehensive framework that outlines a vision for a more sustainable and equitable future for people and the planet.
The SDGs cover a wide range of issues, including poverty reduction, access to education, gender equality, clean energy, responsible consumption and production, and climate action. Each of these goals is interconnected and contributes to the overarching objective of promoting sustainable development.
How are Earth Day and the UN SDGs aligned?
The UN Sustainability Goals and Earth Day are closely aligned as both initiatives focus on promoting sustainability and protecting the planet. Earth Day, which is celebrated annually on April 22nd, is a global event that aims to raise awareness about environmental issues and encourage people to take action to address them.
Earth Day at Boundless Life
Our Explorers worked collaboratively with our educators to come up with ideas to promote sustainability in the classroom.
In Sintra, our Upper Foundation students (aged 10-12) agreed to not use the lights in their indoor learning spaces and took their lessons outside instead. For their Quest, the focus was the negative impact ‘fast fashion’ has on the planet. Explorers used old clothes and recycled materials to create brand-new designs for a sustainable fashion show that is taking place. This was the perfect activity to encourage them to unleash their creativity whilst simultaneously learning about the importance of sustainable fashion.
Our Sintra Explorers also came up with the idea of introducing a water collection station. This is the latest addition to their existing Collection Station for organic material, plastic, cardboard, bottle caps, cans, boxes, etc. The leftover water from lunch is collected and used to water the plants in the Education Centre’s play area.
