Catalina Salas the Uruguay Boundless Life General Manager and family

Can you share a bit about your journey and what inspired you to join Boundless Life’s exciting new chapter in La Barra, Uruguay?

Since my daughter Leia was born, a deep desire to explore the world through her eyes sparked within me. I come from a family of sailors, and my father always encouraged my brothers and me to enjoy the journey, saying, “Lo importante no es el destino, sino el viaje” - what matters is not the destination but the journey itself. It was his way of helping us embrace long hours when there was no wind, teaching us patience and the joy of the process.

That philosophy shaped me, instilling a love for traveling and the belief that connecting with other cultures, people, and places is one of the most enriching ways to grow. After Leia was born, my husband and I wanted to show our daughter the world and all its beauty. We traveled to countries such as Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia and with these moves we were learning and evolving as a family with every experience.

So, when I heard about Boundless Life’s plans to settle in La Barra, I was instantly drawn to it. La Barra’s charm, combined with Boundless Life’s vision of helping families learn and grow at each location, felt like the perfect match - a chance to share that same philosophy of meaningful journeys with other families, right here in this incredible place.

This is the first Boundless Life destination in Latin America. What makes Uruguay, and La Barra in particular, such a special place for traveling families?

Uruguay is a gem of South America. It’s known for having some of the world’s cleanest air and is widely considered the safest country in the region. La Barra, in particular, offers a combination of stunning, untouched coastlines, family-friendly beaches, and scenic coastal walks that make it an idyllic destination.

The town itself is small but lively, with a creative and artistic vibe. It’s a place where families can relax, enjoy quality time, and still find plenty of adventure. Convenient and affordable public transport connects La Barra to Montevideo and Colonia, making it relatively easy for families to explore the capital or even venture further to Buenos Aires, Argentina.

There are incredible day-trip options located just 30 minutes to an hour away. Such as Casa Pueblo, with its iconic white architecture perched on cliffs overlooking the ocean, or the Hand of Punta del Este, a giant sculpture emerging from the sand. If you’re craving seafood, you can head to the quiet fishing village of José Ignacio and enjoy a meal of freshly caught local fish right by the beach. All these experiences are just a short drive from La Barra.

For families who may not know much about Uruguay, what are some of the most compelling reasons to live, learn, and grow here?

Uruguay is a welcoming and peaceful country with a strong sense of community. The locals are incredibly friendly, always ready to share a smile or a story, and the pace of life here is perfect for families seeking balance. You’ll find that it’s easy to embrace an outdoor lifestyle, whether you’re soaking up the sun at the beach, exploring the countryside, or enjoying a barbecue with new friends.

The wine here is exceptional, with many local vineyards producing high-quality bottles that pair perfectly with the country’s renowned beef. On top of that, Uruguay has a vibrant music scene, and the traditional drumming rhythms of the Candombe are an experience that captivates every generation.

How does the Boundless Life program in La Barra take advantage of Uruguay’s rich culture and beautiful natural surroundings to create meaningful experiences for families?

The Boundless Life program is designed to immerse families in the best of what La Barra has to offer. From enjoying beach days and water sports to exploring Uruguay’s traditions, the program provides a blend of adventure, education, and culture. Families can connect with local art and music, discover the incredible wine and cuisine, and even join in community events that make this area so special.

We are in the process of thoughtfully curating a range of ECAs (Extra-Curricular Activities) to provide families with meaningful ways to engage with local culture. While the list is still being finalized, some of the activities we’re exploring include Spanish lessons, surfing, and skating, along with creative art workshops and the chance to learn the delicious craft of making empanadas. Other potential offerings include capoeira and experiences that embrace the authentic Latin spirit, ensuring a variety of enriching opportunities for families.

It’s more than just a place to live - it’s an opportunity to grow together as a family while forging meaningful connections with the local culture and community.

What advice would you offer to parents who are thinking about joining an upcoming cohort in La Barra for the first time?

Come with an open mind and a sense of curiosity! La Barra has so much to offer, from its untouched coastlines and relaxed coastal vibe to its welcoming community. Whether you’re strolling through the small but vibrant commercial and art district or simply enjoying the slow pace of life, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to connect as a family.

And of course - I recommend families take the time to explore beyond La Barra, whether it’s discovering the white cliffs of Casa Pueblo, marveling at the Hand of Punta del Este, or enjoying a laid-back fish lunch in José Ignacio. These are experiences that will leave lasting memories for you and your children.

How do you see the Boundless Life Education Center in Uruguay evolving over time? What kind of impact do you hope it will have on the local community and the families who join?

I see the Education Center becoming a true hub of learning, cultural exchange, and connection - a place where Boundless Life families and the local La Barra community come together in meaningful ways. Over time, I envision the center fostering relationships that go beyond simple interactions, creating a deeper integration between visiting families and the vibrant culture of La Barra.

Rather than living parallel lives, families from Boundless Life will have the opportunity to live alongside locals, participating in traditions, sharing stories, and even contributing to the community in ways that enrich both groups. This could mean joining in local events, engaging with artisans and musicians, or working together on community projects that benefit everyone.

For example, families might learn about the art of drumming from a local Comparsa group, or collaborate with local farmers to explore sustainable practices in the region. Children will have the chance to play and learn with local kids, building friendships that transcend language or cultural differences. These connections create a unique dynamic where families not only grow individually but also contribute to a sense of shared purpose and understanding.
