Boundless Field Trips are an integral part of our education programme and take place fortnightly during our 3-month ‘Experience’ cohorts and weekly during our shorter ‘Getaways’! Read on to find out more about why we think Field Trips are so important and also get a glimpse into just one of the exciting experiences our Explorers have enjoyed so far.
Why are Field Trips so important within Boundless Education?
🌍 Real-world application
Field trips provide Boundless Explorers with the opportunity to apply what they have learned in the Education Centre to real-life situations. They allow them to see the practical application of concepts and theories they have studied, making learning more tangible and meaningful.
Boundless example: Our younger Explorers taking a mini-field trip to the local produce market in Sintra to identify and purchase fresh ingredients for a traditional recipe. They even got to practise measuring and weighing, adding up bills, and using some of the Portuguese phrases acquired during ‘Culture Time’.
🔭 Experiential learning
Field trips offer a hands-on and immersive learning experience. Our Explorers engage in interactive activities, observe demonstrations, and participate in experiments or simulations. This experiential learning approach helps to stimulate their curiosity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
Boundless example: Bali in the summertime is a kite-flying mecca! Explorers will not only get to enjoy watching and flying colourful kites from the beach at Sanur but also get to grips with the physics of kite flying.
🛕 Expanded perspectives
Field trips expose Explorers to new environments, cultures, perspectives, and experiences that may be different from their everyday lives. They encourage them to broaden their horizons, develop empathy, and appreciate diversity. By encountering different people, places, and ideas, our Explorers gain an even greater understanding of the world.
Boundless example: Our Sintra Explorers took a trip to a local Elderly Persons’’ Home to perform songs they had rehearsed. This not allowed them the opportunity to be immersed in a Portuguese-speaking setting, but to also spend time with an age group they wouldn’t necessarily regularly interact with. This was a great field trip and a chance to spread some joy in a mutually beneficial gathering across generations.
🥰 Social and emotional development
Our regular field trips provide opportunities for interaction with peers and educators outside of the Education Centre setting. Collaborative activities and shared experiences during field trips promote teamwork, communication, and social skills. Additionally, being in a new environment can foster independence, resilience, and adaptability as Explorers navigate unfamiliar situations.
Such trips can also ignite a sense of excitement and motivation for learning. They break the routine of daily activities and offer a change of scenery.
Boundless Example: Supporting each other whilst traversing a woodland high-ropes course!
🧑🏽🏫 Enhanced subject-specific knowledge and memory retention
Field trips can deepen students' understanding of specific subjects and topics by providing real-life context. For instance, visiting a Science Centre, organic farm or nature reserve can reinforce scientific concepts taught in class. Similarly, trips to historical sites or art museums can enrich history or art lessons, respectively.
The unique experiences and memories formed during field trips tend to stay with Explorers for a long time. The combination of real-world encounters, emotional engagement, and multi-sensory experiences can strengthen memory recall and retention of the knowledge gained.
Boundless Example: Our Explorers recently got to create their own sustainable skateboards from single-use plastics they collected during the cohort. What’s more, they also got to test them out! What a memorable experience?! This was a fantastic hands-on opportunity to consolidate all the learning accrued throughout their project-based Quest. Our latest Quest was ‘Zooming into Zero Waste’ based on UN Sustainable Development Goal # 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.
Did you know that there are no additional costs for Field Trips as these are included in the Boundless tuition fees? If you want your children to have regular, immersive, hands-on learning experiences, book a Discovery Call with us to get started!
