Kotor has had several rulers throughout the ages, but the Venetian era is perhaps the most notable due to the lasting impact it has left on the landscape in the form of grand Venetian architecture. You can learn about Venetian rule (the city was part of the Venetian Albania province of the Venetian Republic from 1420 to 1797) by visiting the Maritime Museum, Kotor Cathedral, or by strolling the city walls, which begin to snake up the mountainside, offering breathtaking vistas of the bay.
