Thinking about starting the New Year with a new approach and a complete change of scenery? Craving connection, delicious food, and unforgettable experiences, but slightly worried about crowds and peak season flight costs? Look no further than the Boundless Life Experience programme in Tuscany, Italy! Meet Matt as he reflects back on his own gelato-laden experience and what made it so special for his family.
Hi, Matt! Thanks so much for chatting with us. It’s exciting to discuss this particular cohort experience with someone else who’s been there at this perhaps under-appreciated time of year. What made the Jan-March cohort so unique for you guys?
Because it’s naturally a quieter time of year, the families found it to be a great time to forge connections with each other and the local community. We spent lots of quality time together at parks and enjoyed a more intimate experience. Additionally, travel costs and the cost of living were lower compared to peak seasons, and the weather was surprisingly delightful – not too hot, not too cold. Carnivale in Viareggio is SO much fun for the family. Tuscan vineyards and activities have minimal to no crowds leaving you time and space to truly absorb the surroundings and culture.
[Kat} We had the same! A few cooler, festive-feeling days in January (especially with the beautiful Christmas tree in the square still illuminated), but that very quickly transitioned to lots of glorious warm sunshine in Feb and March. And I still think about the Viareggio Carnival. It literally blew my mind - and the kids ask to go back and see it again on a regular basis.

What did your kids enjoy the most?
Picking a favourite is tough! They loved the daily gelato, pizza, and endless park adventures. Plus, the walkable town allowed them to explore freely and feel right at home. They also adored the smaller class sizes at the local school, making friends seamlessly and enjoying delicious, healthy lunches prepared by a local chef (a welcome change from their usual school fare!). Weekend train trips to explore new Italian cities like Venice, Rome, Florence) and the proximity to the glorious beach at Viareggio (1 hour by train direct from Pistoia) were additional highlights. They didn’t want to leave Tuscany!
What was the biggest benefit for your family?
The incredible connections made with other families! These friendships will undoubtedly last a lifetime.
Any unexpected benefits that you came away with?
The ability for my kids to appreciate all that Italy has to offer without crazy crowds while eating fresh/real food and easy access to so many amazing parks. I'd also say the food the kids ate at the Education Centre. Unlike at their public elementary school (where they have 10 minutes to eat a corn dog or other unhealthy food), we had a local chef making real fresh food for the kids to eat together for lunch. The kids really enjoyed being able to engage with their classmates rather than feeling rushed and unhealthy at their public school.
How would you describe your overall Boundless experience in one word?
Fulfilling. It sounds simple, but it captures the essence of Boundless Life perfectly.
What would you say to a family on the fence about experiencing Boundless Life in Jan-Mar?
Take the leap! This programme is perfect for families who want adventure without the stress. Our kids even came back ahead in school! This experience will change your life in the most wonderful way.
